The Diamonds are in the semi-finals!

I can't believe it, but my boys' team, which wasn't even supposed to be in the playoffs, has won it's quarter-final game today, by a single point! They were behind the whole game, except for a couple of minutes in the first quarter. I think we were down by 6 with a minute to go. They played super aggressively in the final minutes, but without too many fouls, as the other team was in bonus. Then, with 4.4 seconds left, we were awarded 2 foul shots, and one went it. The other team could not score in the last 4 seconds and we stole a win. The boys were ecstatic. It will be a game for them to remember, that's for sure.

Alex and Jules are on a trip to visit her aunt in Victoria (along with Alex's Mom), so I have been able to catch up on some sleep here at home. I really need it, as I have been hammered by a cold that will not go away. Earlier on, I was continuing with my training runs, but I have had to skip the last two, as running seems to be prolonging the cold. I just hope this gap in the training does not hurt my marathon in May. I miss them, but luckily we can communicate with Skype.

The race car body work is done and Pat and I have decided to run the first two races with the engine as-is, while monitoring the oil level. After the first two races, there is a 6-week gap and we will have time to do the partial rebuild we have been planning. We should be in a position to do some testing at the St-Eustache race school in less than two
weeks.

My buddies are heading to Watkins Glen to race in the Chumpcar Series this weekend, but for the price of some decent seat time, I preferred not to attend. Besides, I have a couple of basketball practices to organize.

So for the rest of the week, I will concentrate on getting healthier and trying to organize the beginning of the race season, and the end of the boys' basketball season.

Spring is here

It's taken until the last day of the Easter long weekend for me to find time to post here! Jules is napping as I type this. Alex says she heard him say "papa" this morning. I wish I had heard it myself!

Jules at basketball practice

After a final dumping of snow a couple of weeks ago, it finally feels like spring has arrived (even though the temperature will dip below 0 several times in the next few days). I guess I will have to buy some summer tires for the BMW!

I'm actually glad it's warming up a bit, as I have been running four times per week in training for the Ottawa marathon and it's been less than pleasant running on the damp and freezing road. I have had a nasty cold for the past few days, which hasn't made things any easier.

My boys did not play very well in the tournament, winning only one game against a very inexperienced team. However, I was impressed by their serious performance in the last regular season game. Unfortunately, they lost by one point. Somehow, we were still awarded a playoff spot and will be playing in the quarter-final on April 9th. I hope they can bring their A-game once again.

I have not done anything about getting the race car ready. Alex and Jules will be out of town next week, so I should be able to move on that project a little.

Other than that, it's been a busy time! The basketball season is not over, the running season is in full swing, the car season is about to begin and the baby season continues to deprive me of my morning sleep. Still, it's a happy time and it all seems to be going by so fast!

Moving day!

After more than 10 years in Chinatown, I have moved my office to Old Montreal (240 St-Jacques West, Office 800, to be exact). So far, I am pretty happy with the set up. My office is larger and nicer, and I really love Old Montreal. I just have to find a filing cabinet and I will be all set. Alex and Jules both approve of the new location.
Jules, future driver!
It’s spring break at my high school, but the boys have a tournament this weekend (at Jeanne-Mance high school). I will be surprised if we win a single game, given that we play in the lowest division… but you never know what might happen!

The race car is still at Pat’s place. He has all the body parts. I hope the car is ready in the next few weeks. I am trying to decide what types of event to run this summer. I am leaning towards the Super Production Challenge series as most of the races are local, so I can be home for dinner, and also because the tires they run are really inexpensive (108$ for 15”). My car will not be terribly competitive, but I should not finish last either.

I have officially begun my marathon training plan. My first interval run was Tuesday and it went pretty well. I will be running four times per week for the next 12 weeks. The race is May 26th in Ottawa.

It looked like winter was over...

.. and then it wasn't! It snowed several days this past week and I haven't even bothered to dig out the BMW. I've been using public transit to get to basketball and it's actually pretty relaxing. The problem is that I get home later and it's already J's bed time!

At least it's been warmer, and Jules has been getting to go outside a lot, which he seems to like.

In other baby news, Jules has been sleeping better and better and is almost always in a good mood.

Bucket-of-Jules!
He has also started eating solid foods. He seems to like cereal more than veggies, but he has so far eaten a bit of everything offered, thanks to Alex's patience! One advantage of this is that J. no longer needs to be breastfed in the middle of the night, which allows us all to sleep better.

I'm not sure if I like this...
There has been a lot going on with my boys' basketball team. My best player was kicked off the team because he became ineligible to play, having played too many games in a higher-level league. We were also stripped of our points for one game. As a result, we dropped way down in the standings. We also lost two games in a row before finally winning in convincing fashion yesterday (44-25) against Jean-Eudes. I am quite proud of the way they played yesterday... they really worked hard and 9 different players scored points. I think the boys may finally realize they don't need the former best player to win a game.

I have managed to go on a few morning runs before work, and it's not as hard as I thought it would be. Often, I am awake before the alarm rings because of a certain baby, who often likes to make noise in the morning to signify that he is ready to start his day!

Jules at Carl's Superbowl party, playing with a mini autocross cone that Carl gave him (and which is actually a trophy won by Carl)
The race car is nowhere near ready for the new season, but I am finding the parts I need and gradually bringing them to Pat Boyer's place so he can install them. If I get really organized, there is a time trial at Lime Rock on April 13th... could be fun!

The car show: not bad as a father-son activity!

It’s been cold all week and I think the one who suffers the most is little Jules, who doesn’t get to go outside for his daily walk (he doesn’t do any of the walking yet, as he is only 5 months old!). I found a solution to get him out of the house this week: take him to his first car show!

Cabin fever for J!

I devised a plan to park underground and then walk the rest of the way to the car show and it worked perfectly. He was in a good mood most of the time and seemed to enjoy the bright colours, the many people and, most of all, the bright lights shining down on the cars.

I usually regret going to the car show, but I had low expectations this year. I figured it would just be a nice place to walk around with Jules.

As I say every year, I am not terribly interested in new cars, as I don’t plan to ever buy a new car with all the great affordable used cars out there. Still, I have to admit that cars, generally, have been getting better and better in the past few years. There are many really, really boring cars out there, but there are few really terrible cars… which was not at all true in the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Some thoughts:

Nissan, you have a boring line-up. Also, you didn’t even bring a GT-R to the car show. What’s up with that?

BMW: there is no M3 this year, but BMW actually brought one of Bruno Spengler’s DTM-winning M3’s. That was a high point for me.

Lexus: you also have a pretty boring line-up, but I was pleasantly surprised to see an LFA. The car definitely looks better in person than in photos.

Speaking of presence, the new Range Rover also looks much better in person than in pictures.

As usual, there were few race cars on hand. Very few.

I didn’t spend much time in the room of exotic cars, as Jules was fussing a little. One standout: the orange McLaren MP4. I love that colour for McLaren’s!

The base prices on Porsche’s seem almost reasonable. However, the way the price of a car can be inflated by the options list is almost unbelievable. You could buy a nice Honda with the cost of a few options on a Boxster!

Other than that, there were no major surprises or disappointments. I got to take J. to his first car show and we both enjoyed a warm afternoon walking around while it was -20 outside.

In other news, my boys’ team won another game, bringing us to 3 and 1. It was not a great win, however, as the refereeing was all over the place and my boys played very inconsistently.

I watched a movie from the 50's called the Fast and the Furious about an escaped convict who hijacks a Jaguar XK120 and its female driver before heading to a rally. It was really cool to see that the cars being raced were lightly modified sports cars. The XK with the windshield removed (and replaced by a tiny windscreen on the driver's side) really looked like a hard core sports car.

Finally, respect to the driver of this car: -20 degrees and driving a lowered 2wd 911!

IB40

What can I say about turning 40? It doesn't feel like such a big deal. I guess that’s because things are going well and I don’t have any regrets about not achieving specific goals before reaching 40. I’m married with a baby (wonderful wife, wonderful kid!), I have the job I want, I have a condo in a neighbourhood I love, I have 2 cool cars, I’m in good health… really, there is nothing to complain about!

Speaking of good health, I have signed up for the Ottawa marathon in late May. I know I’m not in great shape these days because I’m not really doing any physical activity except walking to work. It’s gonna be tough to get back in shape… I have to be ready to run four times a week starting in March.

Speaking of my birthday, it was raining on January 13th. That’s the first time I can ever remember rain on my birthday.

Ready to eat

Speaking of the baby, he is doing well, and he is a joy to have around. Both Alex and I love spending time with him and luckily for us, he enjoys being out and about in the neighbourhood in his baby carrier. We are also fortunate enough to have two grandmothers willing to babysit Jules several times per week if needed!

Montreal Auto Show is on now. I will probably end up going again this year. I can't not go, yet I almost always regret going. Will I regret it this year? We'll see.

I noticed that near the ticket counters, there were three Scion FR-S’s, all modified by different tuners. As I have mentioned before, I love that car. I realized why they look so good compared to almost any other sporty car on the road: they sit so low to the ground, much lower than almost any other car. The proportions are also great. Here are the photos of the tuner cars.

Pretty but fake race car number 2
Prettiest of the three fake race cars
Strangely enough, they installed race seats and harnesses with no rollover protection. I’m a bit surprised this was allowed by Scion...

I have ordered a couple of parts for the race car, but nothing has been done yet about the piston ring issue or the bodywork. All that has been done is to deliver the car to Pat Boyer’s place. I can’t wait for the racing season to start, but I also worry the car will not be ready…
